A Technical SEO Audit Checklist for Service Websites

A prioritized technical SEO checklist covering crawling, indexing, URLs, metadata, performance, mobile usability and structured data.

A Technical SEO Audit Checklist for Service Websites

A technical SEO audit should identify the issues that prevent useful pages from being discovered, understood or experienced properly. It should not become a long list of warnings without business priority.

Crawling and indexing Check that important pages return a successful status, are not blocked unintentionally, appear in the XML sitemap, and use appropriate canonical URLs. Review excluded pages to understand whether the exclusion is intentional.

Site architecture Important commercial pages should not be buried. Navigation, breadcrumbs and contextual internal links should help both visitors and crawlers understand the hierarchy.

URLs and duplication Use stable descriptive URLs. Identify duplicated pages created by parameters, inconsistent trailing slashes, multiple domains, HTTP versions or repeated category paths.

Titles and headings Every indexable page should have a useful unique title and a clear primary heading. Duplicate metadata often signals a deeper problem with page purpose.

Mobile usability Test actual templates on small screens. Look for overflowing elements, tiny controls, intrusive overlays, layout shift and content hidden behind interactions.

Performance Prioritize slow server response, oversized hero images, render-blocking resources, excessive third-party scripts and unstable layout. Evaluate representative page templates rather than only the homepage.

Structured data Add schema only when it accurately describes visible content. Validate the markup and keep business information consistent.

Prioritize findings Rank every issue by affected page value, scale, severity, effort and confidence. Fixing one indexing problem on revenue-driving pages can matter more than resolving hundreds of minor warnings.

Finish the audit with owners, deadlines and validation steps. A useful audit is an implementation roadmap, not simply a report.
